Europa som en orkester med stråkar

The New European har valde den 13 juli 2017 att publicera, under rubriken:" I have never seen as mush passon for Europe in as today", det tal som professor Timothy Garton Ash höll när det hade blivit känt att han 2017 hade fått det Europapris (Karlspriset) som den tyska staden Aachen sedan 1950 delar till Karl den Stores minne. Detta pris delas ut till personer som har arbetat för enighet och demokrati i Europa.


Ash är professor i europeisk nutidshistoria vid Oxford University med inriktning på Central- och Östeuropa. Ash är också en väl känd författare och skribent. Ash medverkar bland i tidningar som El Pais, The Guardian, Wall Street Journal och Dagens Nyheter. Tre av Ash böcker finns i svensk översättning. Den senast utkomna av dessa är: "Samtidens historia: Rapporter från Europa vid 1990-talets slut", som utkom på Norstedt år 2000.

Ash är en övertygad försvarare av Europatanken och EU-sammarbetet. I sitt tal  är Ash framåtsyfte men samtidigt djupt förankrad i Europas gemensamma politiska och kulturella historia.
Ash sa bl.a.:

As I observed on the day after the Brexit vote, Britain can no more leave Europe than Piccadilly Circus can leave London. I became a passionate European through my intense, unforgettable personal experience of living in a divided Germany, witnessing the emergence of the Solidarity movement in Poland, and sharing the struggle for freedom in Warsaw, Prague, Budapest and Berlin with great central European recipients of the Charlemagne prize such as Václav Havel, Bronislaw Geremek and György Konrád. In those inspiring times, the causes of freedom and Europe marched together, arm in arm: freedom meant Europe, Europe meant freedom. Ever since, Europe and freedom have been the twin leitmotifs of my work. And it’s in the name of Europe and freedom that millions of people are standing up in countries like Hungary and Poland today, to defend our shared values of liberal democracy, the rule of law, freedom of speech and academic freedom. " 


Man undrar när ska vi få höra ett lika helhjärtat försvar för Europeiska värden i vårt land?
